SSD SanDisk Extreme continue to fail unexpectedly: firmware update didn’t help everyone. The fix is promised, but it is unknown when it will be released.

SanDisk, a popular portable SSD manufacturer, is facing customer complaints about data loss and unreadable disks. Users have been reporting these issues with the Extreme and Extreme Pro models for at least the past four months.

SanDisk has acknowledged the problem and stated that a fix is being prepared, initially confirming it for the 4TB capacity models. However, users have also encountered similar problems with the 2TB disks.

Discussions on platforms like Reddit are filled with disappointed users sharing their experiences. It seems that the problem occurs when the disk’s file system is completely erased after prolonged usage, rendering it inaccessible and unmountable. Even attempts to recover the data through reformatting have been unsuccessful in many cases.

Ars Technica‘s own tests confirm these complaints: one of their employees experienced failures with two 2TB Extreme Pro disks. Apparently, the issue pertains to the latest batch of disks released after November 2022.
